Abstract. Increasingly stringent environmental regulations for landfill in the world’s advanced economies, as well as the demand for renewable organic chemicals and fuels, are pushing the manufacturing industry towards greater environmental sustainability in order to improve economic efficiency and meet consumer demand. The author presents that the valorization of food waste is one of the current research areas that has received a lot of attention in the past few years as a potential alternative to the disposal of a wide range of waste in landfills. In particular, it is shown that the development of environmentally sound and innovative strategies for the treatment of such waste is an area of increasing importance in our modern society. Landfilling, incineration and composting of waste are common and traditional waste management technologies. However, they are not suitable for organic waste treatment due to the formation of toxic methane and unpleasant odors, high energy consumption and slow decomposition reaction. Moreover, in the process of decomposition, no valuable product is formed. Rather than recycle and degrade food waste, recent research has focused on its use as an energy source, such as the growing production of bioethanol and biodiesel. Organic waste is also useful for the production of useful organic chemicals (like succinic acid or bioplastics) through biorefining or biotechnology.

The purpose of this article is to summarize recent developments in waste valorization strategies for the sustainable production of chemicals, materials and fuels through the development of sustainable production strategies.

Keywords: waste; environment; anaerobic digestion; sustainable development; substance; waste valorization; fuel production
