One promising technology for process intensification is the use of granular aerobic sludge, which has good sedimentation properties and allows for the combined processes of nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal in a single reactor. However, the widespread adoption of granular aerobic sludge is hampered by the long and unstable granule formation process. The aim of this study was to select and screen specific microbial strains capable of accelerating the formation of stable granules. To this end, the most resistant isolates were selected from a community of granular aerobic sludge formed over 90 days from activated sludge from the Stupino wastewater treatment plant using controlled oxidative stress (treatment with sublethal doses of hydrogen peroxide). Five strains were isolated and identified, two of which were Exophiala sp. (Isolate No. 2) and the bacterium Microbacterium paraoxydans (Isolate No. 3) demonstrated the ability to independently form granules. A bioaugmentation experiment showed that adding these cultures to the initial activated sludge reduced granule formation time to 11 and 14 days, respectively, which is 84–88 % faster than the control (90 days). These results confirm the high efficiency of using selected strains to intensify granular aerobic sludge technology and significantly reduce treatment plant startup time.

Keywords: biological wastewater treatment; granular aerobic activated sludge; strain selection; controlled oxidative stress

Sakayan Daniil Igorevich Gazprom VNIIGAZ LLC, Moscow, Russia E-mail: D_Sakayan@vniigaz.gazprom.ru RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=1152014 Khokhlachev Nikolay Sergeevich Gazprom VNIIGAZ LLC, Moscow, Russia E-mail: N_Khokhlachev@vniigaz.gazprom.ru RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=691378 Cheveleva Anna Nikolaevna Gazprom VNIIGAZ LLC, Moscow, Russia E-mail: A_Cheveleva@vniigaz.gazprom.ru RSCI: https://elibrary.ru/author_profile.asp?id=81703 Pinaev Vladimir Evgenievich Peoples’ …

[48,5

post-3122","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-issue-4-2025","category-article
["GET
