Abstract. Over the past decade, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been increasingly used for various purposes. UAV applications range from monitoring to construction and agriculture. UAVs provide detailed data for surveying various sites, such as ore mines, forests, fields, municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, and others. Despite the advantages of using UAVs for data collection, their methods have not yet gained widespread acceptance in research. This paper presents a review of publications devoted to the feasibility of using modern remote sensing methods to assess the condition of natural and man-made objects, including municipal solid waste landfills. The study aims to obtain objective data on the practical use of UAVs and the further application of methods involving UAVs to assess the residual capacity of municipal solid waste landfills. This summary of published materials on the use of UAVs in surveying man-made and natural areas demonstrates the effectiveness of UAVs in various areas of scientific research and measurement. Using unmanned aerial vehicles to assess the condition of waste landfills could speed up and reduce the cost of data acquisition and processing, while also reducing labor costs. Research in this area will further enable regular monitoring of waste landfill conditions.
