Abstract. The problem of ensuring the safety of the vital activity of the population in large industrial cities at the beginning of the 21st century is becoming extremely urgent. Large industrial cities are among the social structures of high risk due to the dense development of the territory, a complex and often outdated system of engineering and transport communications, high population density, the presence of structures and monuments representing architectural and historical heritage, etc. Tens of thousands of people die from social, anthropogenic, natural and other disasters every year, hundreds of thousands become disabled. From environmental pollution, non-compliance with safety precautions, up to 20…30 % of men and 10…20 % of women die prematurely. The most dangerous from the point of view of the environmental impact on the urban environment are carbon monoxide emissions, the number of which increases annually, mainly because of the exhausts of cars, the number of which has increased significantly in recent years.

The paper considers the problem of ensuring safety of vital activity in large industrial cities, the criteria for safety of vital activity, the most dangerous and harmful factors and substances affecting the degree of pollution of the surrounding atmosphere have been singled out.

In practical part, the authors present a description of Nizhny Novgorod as a large industrial center of the Volga Federal District; the characteristic of areas of the city is given, the comparative analysis of areas of city on a level of safety of environment is carried out; the organizations that are the main sources of industrial emissions are defined, and recommendations are given for improving safety of vital activity.
