Abstract. The design, operation, remediation, and reclamation of municipal solid waste landfills receive significant attention in the media and are the subject of numerous scientific studies. Equally important is the monitoring of the sanitary protection zone surrounding such landfills. This article presents a methodology for rapidly and cost-effectively assessing the condition of the sanitary protection zone and, based on the data obtained, designing measures for the remediation and reclamation of disturbed lands. The author examines the process of preparing multispectral satellite imagery for geographic analysis, including transformation from a geographic coordinate system to a projected one, loading vector boundaries for municipal solid waste landfills and adjacent sanitary protection zones, and cropping the satellite images. The selection of vegetation indices is justified. Maps illustrating the distribution of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index were generated for the municipal solid waste landfill and the adjacent sanitary protection zone. Based on automated classification and vectorization, a vector-format map of SAVI classes was generated for the solid waste landfill and its adjacent sanitary protection zone, and the areas and perimeters of the resulting polygons were calculated. Permissible land-use options within the sanitary protection zone were identified using the public cadastral map. Objectives were established for managing agricultural lands categorized according to Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index values. Class-specific measures have been proposed to stabilize the surface, prevent littering with landfill waste and the formation of unauthorized dumps, and maintain the land in a condition suitable for agricultural use.
