Abstract. The author of a scientific publication analyzes the concept of «outsourcing» and the chronology of its development. The author clarifies that this concept appeared in the literature only in the late 1980s. of the 20th century, however, the outsourcing technology itself appeared earlier — in the 20s of the 20th century. Currently, there are many approaches to defining the essence of outsourcing. Many foreign and Russian scientists have studied this phenomenon and gave their own characteristics of the term «outsourcing». The author distinguishes 2 forms of outsourcing: internal and external, but it is impossible to answer the question, external or internal outsourcing is more effective: in some cases, maintaining control over non-core business processes is the only guarantee of quality. This is typical for countries and industries with a low level of outsourcing development. The author notes that in order to determine the role of outsourcing in the economy as a whole, it is necessary to understand in which areas of management it is used. The author points out that the variety of forms and scopes of outsourcing allows us to say that at the moment it is a common management tool used almost all over the world and significant for the modern economy. The author concludes that outsourcing in Russia began to develop later than in the whole world, due to the late transition from a directive economy to a market one. Currently, the most developed types of outsourcing in Russia are: IT outsourcing, outsourcing of auxiliary processes, accounting and accounting, logistics and transport outsourcing. The transfer of direct production functions to third parties is less common.
