Abstract. Sustainable economic development of Russian territories is impossible without the modernization of the regional socio-economic system. The main factors for increasing the domestic economy include its diversification and strengthening of the scientific and technological complex. The solution to this problem contributes to the innovative activity of economic entities of the Russian Federation, which is one of the major factors in the formation of their competitiveness and sustainable economic growth. An essential condition for improving the quality of life is the improvement of ecological situation in region. It acquires issues in this field special importance in the context of socio-economic development, ecologial security of border regions. Is it no exception and regions of the Russian-Belarusian border area formed by the regions of Bryansk, Smolensk and Pskov.
The main leitmotiv of the scientific literature on this issues is that in the foreign and domestic practice has not yet developed a unified theoretical and methodological approach to the evaluation of the achieved level of ecological situation of the business entity (country, region, enterprise), making it difficult to conduct a comparative analysis on the macro-, meso- and micro levels.
The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of the ecological situation of the Russian regions (Bryansk, Smolensk and Pskov) of the Russian-Belarusian borderland. Based on the indicators of the environmental rating of the subjects of the Russian Federation, a comparative analysis of the Russian regions bordering the Republic of Belarus was carried out. The directions of modernization of the regional policy aimed at improving the ecological situation in the subjects of the Russian Federation are identified. These science-based results will allow the authorities to increase the effectiveness of decision-making in the management of environmental safety and environmental protection at the regional level.
