Abstract. Current issues regarding use of natural resources and environmental degradation are caused by the established consumption and production patterns.
The steps towards sustainable consumption and production patterns are justified and proposed in the fundamental UN documents dedicated to sustainable development including sustainable development goals 12. The article focuses on the content of these documents as well as on the linkage between the transition to the sustainable consumption and production patterns and such phenomena as decoupling, circular economy and life-cycle assessment. Environmental certification, ecolabelling programmes, is one of the well-established tools in the transition towards sustainable consumption and production. It facilitates the implementation of national strategies for sustainable development and priority objectives such as tackling climate change while increasing product’s competitiveness on the global market and contributing to the establishment of sustainable public procurement system. Though standards of environmental certification and ecolabelling programmes comply with the sustainable development targets, there is so far only limited information about the impact of environmental certification on widespread application of environmental technologies and development of sustainable consumption through market promotion of eco-products and eco-services. There is also lack of awareness among Russian consumers about the most famous ecolabels. To challenge this lack of knowledge the authors of the article provide data on national ecolabelling programmes as well as the most famous ecolabels.
