Abstract. Global production of plastic has grown rapidly in recent decades, surpassing many other artificial materials, but we have little information about its fate after leaving production – what proportion is recycled, burned or thrown away? Such knowledge can help to find more effective solutions to the problems associated with the global increase in the production and use of plastics.
