Abstract. The article considers the current problems of modern hunting industry. It shows a precipitous reduction in the number of hunting users who are assigned areas of hunting grounds in Yakutia. The need to adopt a new law «On the hunting industry of the Russian Federation» is substantiated in order to increase the responsibility of authorized bodies of the constituent entities of Russia for working with hunting users and the rational exploitation of game animal reserves. The main concepts used in Federal Law No. 209 «On hunting and the conservation of hunting resources…» are considered, among which the first place is occupied by «hunting resources», which are defined as objects of the animal world that, in accordance with this Federal Law and (or) laws of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, are used or can be used for hunting purposes. The dynamics of the number of main game animals (hunting resources) in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is given, which allows us to conclude that the results of the conducted accounting work may not correspond to their actual number. One of the reasons for the possible discrepancy is the desire of hunting users to increase the quotas for the extraction of licensed species of animals, which may lead to the undermining of the reproductive potential of populations. Ways are proposed to improve the accounting work through state funding, which will significantly increase the demands on the participants in the accounting work. One of the ways to increase the reliability of scientific work may be the creation of independent groups of specialists to conduct control counts in model territories.
